Trauma Healing Yoga stems from neuroscience, developmental psychology and interpersonal biology, where we consider that trauma impacts the body as much as the mind.

A trauma is any event in life that was too much for us to handle at the time it happened. It can be anything from a car crash, having surgery, or surviving assault, to not feeling like our feelings were validated, not having a nurturing childhood environment, feeling forced to do things we didn’t want to, or needing to repress feelings.

Trauma can lead us to being unable to process what happened. We end up losing fragments of ourselves, which can disturb our nervous system. We will address the reason why we have low self-esteem, chronic pain, depression, or self harming behaviours in an intellectual way, where we combine healing the mind as well as the body.

Trauma Healing Yoga is a specific approach of yoga designed to rebalance the nervous system, which often gets stuck on our survival modes (fight, flight or freeze). Those survival modes are great to keep us alive. However, experiencing trauma means parts of us still live in the past and can’t get over overwhelming situations. We end up spending a lot of time being hyper-alert, afraid of potential threats in our daily routine, ready to run, fight for our life, or play dead. As a way to cope with this energy-consuming state that prevents us from enjoying life and radiating our full potential, we often develop unhealthy coping mechanisms (self-harm, eating disorders, addiction, depression, burnout, etc).

Through this two-hours workshop, participants will learn somatic tools to expand their resilience, cultivate the ability to resource and learn how to regulate themselves. The focus will be put on cultivating a sense of safety in the body with the support of curiosity and compassionate inquiry. Among the somatic tools, we will use our perceptions and senses, our ability to visualize, and cultivate a present-state awareness in order to choose what brings you balance. The yoga practice will consist of a slow yoga flow, inclusive for all levels and bodies.

Laura Martin is from Belgium and discovered the joy of movement early on in life. She was hooked on moving the body and loved the playfulness and freedom that came with it. Although she has always been a curious and passionate human, she experienced a disconnection with her body and it left her with self harming behaviours, chronic anxiety and she was burnt out. It wasn’t until she started practicing yoga and cleaned her diet that she began to see the light at the end of the tunnel. After finishing her second master's degree, she decided to follow that light and started a year-long journey in Asia with India as the first destination, where she completed a yoga teacher training program and Reiki energy healing program. This was the beginning of her healing journey and vocation in life. Since then, she has been dedicated to sharing the somatic tools for self-healing and helping people recognize and trust the light that they are.
